Product Description
The Granite Gear Blaze 60 backpack has a 60 liter capacity and provides a very comfortable fit. Its the perfect pack for an extended backpacking / camping trip into the back country.
The Blaze 60 comes in three torso sizes to ensure you can find a perfect fit 1. short 2. regular and 3. long. So between those and the various adjustment options available in the pack, you will get a great fit.
In fact, the comfortable fit is one of the stand out things about this backpack, it really excels in this area.
Weighing around 3lbs / 1.36 kg, give or take a bit for short, regular or long torso options, there are a whole range of excellent features available with the Blaze 60.
Features
The A.C. (air current) frame lets you adjust the pack to fit your torso to your exact requirements, the adjustment features are easy to use too. The frame along with the adjustable hip belt and molded foam back panel, means you can comfortably carry 50 lbs. / 22.6 kgs.
The A.C. frame also ensures easy ventilation between the pack and your back, so it keeps backs cool and dry, free from heat build up and potential hot spots.
At 60 liters, it’s a perfect size for an extended camping or hiking trip into the hills. It also has load lifter straps to help you best balance out the weight you need to carry. This helps to ensure that you can easily maintain your stability whatever the load.
The removable lid compartment converts to a chest pack, which is perfect for a summit day or short trip away from camp, when you only want to bring a few things. The sternum strap is also removable and can also be used as a very functional fanny pack.

Summary
If we were to offer a couple of criticisms of this pack they would be that there are no straps for strapping in a sleeping pad on the outside front of the pack, which can be nice to have. Also, some of the buckles are a little fiddly with gloves on.
However, the Granite Gear Blaze 60 is overall a really excellent backpack, that has most of the features you will ever need in a functional backpack. All of these features are practical and work well, and the pack is very comfortable to wear.
It is at the middle of the price range for this type of backpack, and you get a lot of excellent capability for the price you pay!

Product Description
The Flash 55 backpack by REI Co-op is a practical backpack that can accommodate a trip of a single night right up to a week. REI are well known as a top gear provider and outlet, so they know what they are talking about when it comes to gear for the hills.
Depending on its size, this backpack has either a 53 liter (small), 55 liter (medium) or 57 liter (large) capacity. This offers a decent level of packing space for a longer period on the trail, although we would prefer a bit more space in a backpack.
The main compartment is roomy and easy to access, and the roll-top closure lets you snug the pack down to fit the size of your load, whatever you may be carrying.
The pack is an internal frame backpack made from 100-denier ripstop nylon fabric in the main body and 420-denier nylon in the bottom. The frame itself is steel. This fabric itself isn’t bad, but it could be stronger and more abrasion resistant.
As mentioned, the pack comes in three sizes, so there are several options to help accommodate different torso sizes and waist lengths.
Features
The Packmod Compression straps can be adjusted as needed to help ensure you have a great fit and they are also fully removable. These can be adjusted to get a good fit, however this is another area we think could work better, as there is limited adjustment in the shoulders.
The 3D contoured hipbelt and ventilated back panel provide comfort for a long day on the trail, with a load of between 15-30 lbs. This will cover most backpackers needs. The ventilated back panel is functional and works well allowing air to move around your back.
There are loads of practical features in the Flash 55. There are lots of additional pockets and storage areas, in addition to the main compartment. some of these are detachable e.g. the top lid can be removed and used as a standalone 5.75 liter pocket.
Some of the other pocket options are:
- Packmod pockets on the shoulder straps and hipbelt (these can also be removed)
- Water bottle pockets which are positioned forward on the hipbelt so you don’t have to remove the pack to grab your drink (these also feature snap closures to enable a good grip on slim water bottles)
- Exterior side pockets for storing light items that you want to keep handy
- Breathable mesh front pocket to store an easy access piece of kit e.g. a rain shell
There are plenty of attachment loops on the pack which allow ice axes, poles, tools, etc. to be lashed on, further expanding your carrying ability while not sacrificing stability. The pack is also hydration reservoir compatible.
Summary
The Flash 55 sits in the middle of the range in terms of price for a backpacking backpack of this quality.
We like the Flash 55 backpack 🙂 It’s functional and comfortable to wear. The pack is not the most durable option available though.

Where to Start When Choosing a Backpack
If you are totally new to this, it can get confusing when you start to look into it. There are so many options to choose from when trying to find the right backpack for you, and the prices vary so widely, it can be difficult to know where to start.
There are numerous things you need to think about, but first and foremost, you need to think about capacity. A backpacking backpack, will typically run from 50 to 75 liters (but that can be a little less or more).
The reason you need more capacity, is that you need to carry your shelter, typically a tent, and your sleeping kit with you.
If you are just heading out for a day out on the trail, then this is much too big, and a day pack is what you need. Now, even between day packs and a backpacking pack, there can be a lot of daylight.
A typical day pack could be 25 liters and a backpack, as we have already indicated is up at 65 liter (and beyond) mark.
What about the inbetween? There are indeed packs in the 30 and 40 liter marks, as well as above 80 liters. What are they for? Well really, it depends what you need them for.
For example, if you’re a hike leader, a 25 liter day pack may not be enough to carry all the extras you as a leader should be carrying e.g. a bothy bag, safety equipment, etc.
I don’t want to stray too far into that, but hopefully it helps to illustrate a point, namely that you need to know what you need your pack for.
Learn More
Typically, for a few days plus backpacking, you need in and around a 65 liter backpack. If that still sounds right, you’re in the right place 🙂
We go into the specifics of what you should look for in our backpack buying guide, but as a quick guide, we have listed out the key things in the bullets below:
- Internal Frame or External Frame – We recommend you always go with an internal frame
- Capacity – as above, how much do you need to carry
- Weight – You’ll be carrying this on your back so light is good
- Material – Durability, strength, water resistance, etc.
- Fit – It of course needs to fit well, and be easily adjustable for comfort, etc.
- Features – Attachment points for tools, easy access pockets, detachable day pack, etc. What do you need?
- Hydration sleeve – Do you need it to be compatible with a hydration sleeve
- Ventilation / Air Flow – Does the pack allow your back and torso to breathe when wearing it
- Price – What is your budget? As with anything you can spend a lot of money on a good backpack so know your limit
And that’s just some of the things to think about. As you can see, there are a lot of factors involved, so it is a good idea to get very clear about what you need and what you would like to have, keeping functionality and comfort at the forefront of your buying decision
Conclusion
So as you can see, there are a wide variety of backpacking backpacks for men in 2023 available on the market today, and one to suit all levels of budget.
It’s worth mentioning again, that in our opinion, you get what you pay for, so if you’re a serious backpacker, it’s advisable to get one of the pricier options, simply because they are of a better quality.
It’s all about what you need though, and one of the budget options might do the job just fine. It is fundamentally important to know your requirements for what you need your pack for, before you purchase.
We really hope you found this article useful, if you did please like and share it around your networks 🙂 We will be updating it as newer and better packs come online. With technology ever advancing, new and improved packs are coming out onto the market regularly.
